problem

Lack of research facilities in the Waterberg Area especially for farmers and wildlife conservation professionals.

solution

Based in South Africa, a global hub of scientists, students and rangers for training and conducting research projects to advance agriculture and wildlife (forensic) science.

project overview

  • Climate change — rising temperatures, unpredictable rainfall patterns, and increasing desertification — combined with poaching and destruction of animal habitats are posing a huge risk to nature conservation. There is a need for innovative agricultural solutions to develop climate-resilient crops, improve soil health, and optimise water use. At the same time, more research and forensic capabilities are needed to track poachers, enforce environmental laws and protect endangered species.

  • Establish a research centre, which would involve the construction of a physical building and developing relevant infrastructure, including partner networks. The lab will empower local farmers and biodiversity professionals. It will also help the justice chain by training rangers, police, prosecutors, and judges while providing specialised training for veterinarians. It will also facilitate international knowledge exchange.

We have already secured funding for most of the necessary equipment from universities and companies working with relevant topics willing to donate (previously used) equipment.

expected outcomes

  • Increased local conviction rates and successful prosecution of wildlife criminals

  • Capacity building for students, farmers, rangers, officials and veterinary professionals
